Celebrate Christmas with the

Sounding Joy Christmas Choir 2017

Love to participate in a choir, and sing familiar Christmas music? This is the site you're lookling for!

The Dallas Christmas Choir (The Sounding Joy) practices in November and sings in December. We perform at malls (Northpark this year, Senior Citizens facilities, and other places around Dallas.)

This is a short term commitment for those who love to sing in a choir. Our rehearsal and performance times DO NOT typically conflict with church choirs -- so bring your church choir folk along, and sing with us. This is a way to do something you will REALLY enjoy this Christmas season.

We practice at the Tyler Street Church, near the Bishop Arts district. (Directions)

Sign up right now on the web.

Or send an email to alan@dallaschristmaschoir.com and say Yes! I want to participate.

Help us help others

Personal items needed. The Sounding Joy will be singing at senior citizen residences his year. Many of these older people live in near poverty conditions. We hope to give them small Christmas gifts at the performance. We’re told they need personal items such as soap, toothbrushes, deodorant, socks, etc. … and they also like candy. If you know of some resource (hotel, dentist, store, etc.) that would be willing to donate some of these items, we’d be happy to get them to the individuals in need. Any quantity from 50, 100, or 200 can be used. Contact alan@dallaschristmaschoir.com if you have something to donate.

Typical Questions:

Do I need to be a musician to join? If you have sung in a choir before (school, church, etc) and can follow a specific choral part (soprano, alto, bass, tenor), you'll fit right in.

I am a musician, how can I help? Of course, come join in on the fun! Plus, if you play an instrument, or have other ways you think you could help with the choir, let us know.

What about the voice lessons? A voice lesson class (free) is offerred to all participants before each rehearsal from 6pm to 6:45pm. We'll give you the opportunity to sign up for these lessons. (More information soon...)

Do I have to come to all rehearsals? We want you to come to as many as possible. (We have 3 rehearsals planned. Each is 1.5 hours -- the first 3 Thursdays in November from 7-8:30pm.) Our plan is to also provide you with some recordings to help you practice on your own. (The music we sing are typically songs you may already know. They are usually 2-part or SATB. We intentionally select songs that the choir can learn in limited rehearsals.)

Will I have to commit to all performances? We know that people have busy schedules. We generally plan performances on evenings or weekends. We hope each member will make every effort to particpate in each performance, but we know it is not always possible.

What's the purpose of this group? There are (at least) two purposes: It is for people who love Christmas music, and enjoy celebrating Christmas through song. We also want to bring Christmas joy to the Dallas community. For example, when we sing in senior facilities we often bring residents small gifts to help them celebrate Christmas. At times a professional Santa donates his time to help make the celebration even more special for them.

Who funds this group? This is an all volunteer group that is funded by ourselves. You are under no financial obligation to join. We do receive donations from individuals who want to help us purchase gifts for seniors, and to purchase music, etc.

Who sponsors the group? The group was started by the Tyler Street United Methodist Church in Dallas. They continue to support this community choir for the Christmas season, providing a place for us to practice, and by providing the support of musicians.

What songs do you sing? We're finalizing this year's list now, but past seasons include: Deck the Halls, It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas, Happy Holidays, Hark the Herald, Joy to the World, Lo How a Rose, Carol of the Bells, Do You Hear What I Hear?, Welcome to This World, The Jesus Gift, O Little Town of Bethlehem, What Child is This, Silent Night, Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, and others.

How can I help spread the news about the Sounding Joy Choir? See the links above to posters and postcard size flyers. Please print them out and put them on bulletin boards, or distribute them in any way you think would be helpful. Thanks.
